How does Red Yeast Rice (RYR) work for cholesterol?
Good question! The Chinese have used RYR for 2000 years. By inhibiting the enzymes that make cholesterol in the liver, RYR acts in a similar manner as a statin. Despite a bit of controversy about a decade ago that threatened its use, RYR is a viable option, along with a healthy diet, for reducing cholesterol levels. The primary ingredient in RYR is monocolin K, also called lovastin, but other monocolins contained in RYR also help produce the cholesterol lowering benefits. In fact, a study by the University of Pennsylvania published in June of 2009 showed RYR could still lower cholesterol effectively in people who could not tolerate statin drugs.
