Sleep Formula™ is actually Valerian Rest™ (valerian and lemon balm) with a few extra sleep helpers added, namely passion flower and 5-HTP for those needing a more potent sleep formula. Sleep Formula™ also is good for those trying to wean off prescription medication.
You should never stop taking a medication without medical supervision from the prescribing doctor. Since supplements offer therapeutic benefits, treat them with equal respect. Learn what to expect, side effects if any, and conflicts with existing meds. Many pharmacists are familiar with natural substances and can assist you as well as your doctor. Of note, many drugs do not get you into stage 3-4 sleep and often rebound, making sleep worse if you try to stop taking them. They may be a fast answer but in the long run will not be as health sustaining as 6-8 hours of natural slumber.
SSRIs are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. As the name implies, they inhibit serotonin release. 5-HTP actually is a precursor to serotonin, thus increasing the body’s ability to "make more". Since serotonin affects mood, pain and sleep and is low in FMS and ME/CFS, it makes sense to make more to address these symptoms rather than hoard what little is available. What's more, 5-HTP does not have the side effects or addictive potential of SSRIs like Paxil or Prozac.
Valerian is the most widely used over the counter sleep aid in Europe and studies over the past 30 years in Europe prove its efficacy for sleep. Many are double-blind, placebo-controlled studies of valerian root extract (VRE) with other herbs, including lemon balm (Melissa) and hops. The beauty of VRE is that it reduces night time wakenings and improves stage 3-4 sleep without addiction or a next morning hangover effect. And, it bears repeating, VRE needs to be 0.5-0.8% valerenic acid from the root extract to work.
Many herbs work immediately for sleep in healthy individuals. However, if you already have a sleep problem, it may take a week or two before your body adjusts and responds to therapy. If it took you several months (or years!) to develop sleep disruption, please do not expect to see a change in one night!
