Summer's brutal on more than just your skin...
Protect those peepers with the right kind of sunglasses. Oxidative damage caused by UV rays can cause premature cataracts (clouding of the lens of the eye). What's more, how healthy your retinas are determines how long before age-related macular degeneration sets in. An irreversible eye disorder that affects the central portion of the retina, there's no cure so prevention is your best defense. Limiting direct sun exposure is one way to offset offending rays. Another is buying and using a good pair of sunglasses. Look for glasses with both UVA and UVB protection. It'll be worth a few extra bucks to make sure your eye health is covered, so to speak. A wrap around kind also spares delicate tissue on the side of the eyes where you get those "smile" lines (also caused by squinting in the sun!). Finally, think about taking another proactive step by eating lots of fruits and veggies rich in bioflavonoids (lutein especially), which are specific to retinal health. These antioxidants fight oxidative damage. If your diet is low in these helpful foods, or you live in sunnier states where sunglasses rule, think about taking TyH's Eye Complex. It's high in lutein and other beneficial nutrients to keep eyes looking strong while your shades keep you looking good!
